Since the birth of my first son almost 26 years ago,
I have struggled with my weight. I have tried many
different diets without any long-range success, and
continued to yo-yo my way through all those years.
We're always looking for the quick, easy fix. It
doesn't exist.
Finally in November of 1999, my close friend
suggested we join TOPS Chapter 256, Brockton, to
lose weight together. There were many times after I
joined when my yo-yo dieting was so discouraging I
wanted to give up. My TOPS friends wouldn't let that
happen. It's such a wonderful feeling to know that
week after week as you attend meetings you will
always be welcomed with open arms.
Once I had decided to take back the power I had
allowed food to have over my life, my determination
and desire to live a healthier, happier life began.
I started my plan for healthier eating and
exercising on June 9, 2011 and continued to lose
each week until goal. With the support, love, and
encouragement of my biggest fan, my husband, as well
as my TOPS friends, I reached my goal on October 25,
2011.
I have always felt that maintaining after reaching
your goal would be so difficult. I was wrong.
Maintenance for me is about awareness, continued
commitment, and remembering how far I've come. The
gratification you experience from food is so
temporary. The gratification you experience from
looking and feeling good is with you always.
This journey has been one of the most challenging
and rewarding experiences of my life! I know the
saying "If I can do it, you can do it" has become
cliché, but it's true. Each one of us has a thinner,
healthier version of ourselves yearning to be set
free.
